AB OBJECTIVES: To evaluate HIV 1 and HIV 2 infection trend in commercial
Blood Donors of Gujarat. METHODS: 4 times per year, blood samples were
collected from CBDs. The project is running since last 4 years. Each
sample has been collected with pre-test counselling. 535 forms on KAP
study have been evaluated. RESULTS: Since 1991, 535 CBDs have registered
themselves with GAP, whose blood samples have been regularly tested for
HIV at every 3 months interval. Karpas test kits has been used for
screening and reconfirmation of the positive samples were done by ELISA
test. 37 samples were found HIV positive, amongst these 4 were HIV 2
positive and 2 gave the positive reaction to both HIV 1 and 2. All the
persons revealed their seropositivity at the first time when they came
for the test excepting one. This person denied the sexual encounter
earlier or in between the period. From the 37 seropositives, 20 admitted
that they had visited CSW but rest 17 denied such encounter. CONCLUSION:
None of the HIV 2 positives have ever visited CSW and all of them are of
Blood Group A. The question is whether HIV 2 transmission is more
potential through unsterilized equipments? Two person showed both
positive reaction for HIV 1 and 2. It is to be recognised that HIV 2 has
already been seen in the community of blood donors in India and if it is
true that the blood donors did not visit the CSW yet they are positive,
then the infection might have spread to them through the unsterilized
equipments used at the blood tapping centres. And based on this the
percentage of such infection rate is around 45%.
